Tunnel of Terror 🫣

by: Chris Goldby ∣ Hickory Algorithm

It’s spooky season! That magical month in Hickory, North Carolina, where every weekend seems to deliver a new reason to get out and celebrate our community. Just last weekend, Oktoberfest drew over 40,000 people through our downtown streets. This is a shining example of what this area does best: show up, have fun, and support local.

Between BBQ cookoffs, charity 5Ks, pumpkin patches, and town festivals like the Long View Fall Festival, October always gives us something to look forward to.

But this year, there’s an event creeping into Hickory that deserves a spotlight. Something a little different. Something… sinister.

Let me introduce you to the Tunnel of Terror — a haunted car wash experience happening at Tommy’s Express Car Wash on 127 in Viewmont.

Back when I first met Matt Grimm, owner of Tommy’s Express Car Wash in Hickory, we talked about marketing, customer experience, and creative engagement. In that meeting, he mentioned an idea from Tommy’s corporate playbook — a Halloween event called Tunnel of Terror.

At the time, Matt hadn’t decided whether it was the right fit. But me? I was hooked immediately.

You see, before founding Hickory Algorithm, I worked in grocery retail in Pittsburgh, and marketing was always my thing. One of my custom in-store campaigns earned me a Master Marketer nomination and a trip to Minnesota. So when a campaign idea hits my radar that combines experience, community, and originality - I take notice.

This week (today), the idea is officially coming to life — or should we say… afterlife.

For four nights only (October 17, 18, 24, and 25 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM), Tommy’s Express Car Wash will transform into a horror show on wheels. The beautiful, glass-encased tunnel will be completely blacked out, while lighting and fog machines add eerie atmosphere to every turn of the wash. But that’s not all.

Tommy’s Express is partnering with the St. Stephens High School Theatre Department, whose talented students will bring the terror. Expect costumes. Props. Stations like The Chop Block. And full commitment to character from some of Hickory’s most promising young actors.

Terror at Hickory Oktoberfest

I had the chance to sit down with Molly, before she and Matt came into First Talk with Hal Row with some of her students.

How long have you been doing St. Stephen’s Theatre?

Molly: 20 years.

What’s your favorite part of the Tunnel of Terror?

Molly: Working with the community. I love the opportunity to get out and off of campus and getting into the community. I can’t wait to show case the amount of time these kids have put into their “stations.”

The actual interview from the First Talk with Hal Row show with guests Matt, Molly, and some of the students from St. Stephens to talk about Tunnel of Terror.

The students aren’t just going through the motions. They’re rehearsing, choreographing, and brainstorming unique scare zones. Expect the unexpected.

This event is also fundraising for the United Way, meaning your scare session does more than make you scream and it supports your neighbors.

My three teenage boys already have October 17th highlighted. We’ll all be piling into my truck and heading over to see just how terrifying this tunnel can get.

Whether you’re a parent looking for something different to do with the family, a high school student out with friends, or someone who just loves Halloweendon’t miss this event.
